Another Random Obsession - BritComs

If I could truly explain my obsession with British Comedies I would, but you'll just have to settle for what I write here.

I. LOVE. THEM.

It started when I was a kid and they would come on PBS on Saturday nights. I remember watching:

Are You Being Served

Fawlty Towers

Keeping Up Appearances

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098837/

Waiting for God

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098945/

As Time Goes By

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105943/

These shows ranged from the 70's to the 90's and I would definitely not be considered their targeted audience as I was young and these focused on middle aged to elderly characters. It didn't matter that they were about older people or that the setting seemed dated or even that they reran episodes frequently because there were only 6 episodes in a season! I watched them religiously!

Then as the internet became a thing and I got older and had money to purchase dvds, PBS introduced me to some new shows and others I manged to search and find on my own, I had many more to watch (some even age expected, I refuse to say appropriate) shows like: Absolutely Fabulous, Coupling, The Vicar of Dibley, The Office, Spaced, Black Books, Father Ted, the IT Crowd, and a really strange one called The Mighty Boosh. (Check out IMDB for the descriptions of these!)

Let me tell you about The Mighty Boosh. It's kind of a sketch comedy, but mostly not. Its whimsical and super weird and I can't tell you how many times I've watched every single episode (same with Spaced and Black Books). I had introduced two of my friends to the show and they became obsessed with this oddity as well. Where this show is a bit different form the others is that there was this really brief window where it was added to the Adult Swim lineup on Cartoon Network and there was a big enough cult following that they came to the States for a meet and greet. A friend of mine who I guess could be considered an even bigger fan than I am surprised me with a trip to LA to see them. It literally was out of the blue, she bought two round-trip tickets, reserved a room, and got the meet and greet tickets and then told me we were flying from Fl to CA, for basically a less that 48 hour trip, to meet the cast. I have never done anything so spontaneous in my life and it was one of the best trips I have ever taken.

The short of it is that I'm obsessed with britcoms and I think you should be too.

  1. The Saturday night PBS line up used to be my favorite! I haven't watched any of the newer ones you mentioned but I can't wait to check them out.

The Culture of Connectivity - Jose Van Dijck - Chapter 4

Chapter 5 focuses on Twitter. Originally the creators of Twitter were striving to create a utility. A piece of information infrastructure that was an everyday and unnoticeable part of our lives, like electricity or phones. Van Dijck says that this created a paradox in that is "presumes Twitter to be a neutral platform upon which users freely interact, much like the Web itself...indifferent to the contents they exchange" but that "the streams of data are engineered to promote certain uses and users over time" (p.69). Van Dijck says this paradox of "enabling connectedness while engineering connectivity" and "propagating neutrality while securing profitability" show up in every aspect of the platform. This is kind of a trend in all social media platforms as the start out about the user, but need to pay the bills... The Twitter platform has has some pivotal contributions to the culture of connectivity (culture influence tech while tech influences cul...

Favorite Places - Lucky Goat Coffee - Tallahassee, FL

This place has only been working its way into my list of favorite places. I've lived in Tallahassee for about 2 years and its my go to place when I want a good cup of coffee or to get out of the apt and study or do work. I don't know too much about it but what I can't stress enough is the need for you all to stop in and get one of their cold brew brownies!!! I guess it was last summer, but I went in for a coffee and decided I wanted something sweet, so I got a brownie. My life was changed forever, LOL, this was one of the best brownies I have ever eaten. It was fudgy, it was chocolaty, I think the cold brew was in there like chocolate chips. I went back every single day for like a week and ha half before I made myself stop.  I like the Midtown location and I would also recommend the pistachio muffin, but that brownie....  Here is the link to their website: https://luckygoatcoffee.com/
